New WHO guide on educating medical and nursing students in MNS care
A message shared on behalf of World Health Organization, Mental Health Unit.
WHO has developed a new resource that has the potential to impact nursing education worldwide. Educating medical and nursing students to provide mental health, neurological and substance use care: A practical guide for pre-service education provides a practical framework for enhancing first-degree medical and nursing education in mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) care. It outlines how to integrate 12 core competencies into curricula, offering guidance for universities, educators, and workforce planners. The guide emphasizes competency-based education that equips future doctors and nurses with the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to provide quality care for people with MNS conditions.
How to utilize this resource:
- Download the complete guide: https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240104129
- Use the guide to advocate for strengthening university education in MNS care
- Apply the competency framework in developing new or reviewing or revising existing medical curricula
- Incorporate these recommendations into accreditation standards and quality improvement initiatives
