Psychopharmacotherapy plays a crucial role in treating psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, often significantly improving patient outcomes. Certain medication show high efficacy, such as psychostimulants for ADHD, or are essential for recovery in severe conditions, such as schizophrenia or major depression. However, medications can only be effective when patients take them – a major challenge in managing young patients with mental health conditions. Poor adherence remains one of the most significant obstacles to therapeutic success. Even when medications are effective and well-tolerated, they are often not taken as prescribed. Why is this the case? This webinar will examine the causes of non-adherence in children and adolescents with mental diseases, identify patients at higher risk, discuss methods of assessing adherence, and outline strategies to improve medication adherence.

Alex Häge is the Deputy Medical Director of the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany. He is a Specialist in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and leads the Research Group Paediatric Psychopharmacology as well as the Research Group ADHD in Childhood and Adolescence. His research focuses on clinical trials, particularly on the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of new pharmacological treatment approaches. 

He has been involved in various research activities funded by the pharmaceutical industry and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). He has predominantly participated in EU-funded research projects, including the EU-FP7/H2020 projects: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Drugs Use Chronic Effects (ADDUCE), Pediatric European Risperidone Studies (PERS), Suicidality: Treatment Occurring in Pediatrics (STOP), Translational Approaches to Compulsivity Disorders (TACTICS), Effects of Nutrition and Lifestyle on Impulsive, Compulsive, and Externalizing Behaviors (Eat2beNice), and Prevention and Remediation of Insulin Multimorbidity in Europe (PRIME). 

In 2019, his research group was awarded the AGNP Research Prize for the SEMA Project (Subjective Experience and Medication Adherence in Adolescents with Psychiatric Disorders). Alex Häge contributed to the development of the S3 Guidelines on ADHD and Conduct Disorder and is a member of the AGNP Pediatric Psychopharmacology Working Group and the European Network for Hyperkinetic Disorders (EUNETHYDIS).
